I september 1963 försökte Chess Records med detta akustiska folk-bluesalbum att få en del av den växande marknaden för akustiska inspelningar. McKinley Morganfield, mer känd som Muddy Waters, hade redan spelat i årtionden inom Chicagos blues- och jazzscen och föredrog egentligen elgitarr och moderna bluesinterpretationer. Under 1950-talet hade han haft flera hits med den stilen, men efter 1958 hade framgångarna börjat sina. Utgåvan från 1964 blev dock en succé, och albumet kom att definiera genren för akustisk blues – ett verk som än idag är eftertraktat bland audiofiler.
Blueskvartetten bestod av Muddy Waters som sångare och gitarrist, Buddy Guy på andragitarr, Willie Dixon på kontrabas och Clifton Jones på trummor. Inspelningen har nu omarbetats av Kevin Gray på Cohearent Audio och innehåller bonusspår som inte fanns med i originalutgåvan.
Ljudkvaliteten är en riktig pärla; även om det inte känns som om musikerna står i rummet så är det definitivt som att man själv befinner sig i inspelningsstudion i Chicago.

In September 1963, Chess Records tried to get a piece of the growing acoustic recording pie with this acoustic folk-blues album. McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, had been playing in the Chicago blues and jazz scene for decades by then and actually preferred the electric guitar and modern blues interpretations and had scored a few hits with them in the 1950s, but things had been looking pretty bleak since 1958. The 1964 release was a hit and has defined the acoustic blues genre to this day and is highly sought after by audiophiles.
The blues quartet consisted of Muddy Waters on vocals and guitar, Buddy Guy on second guitar, Willie Dixon on upright bass and Clifton Jones on drums. The recording has been reworked by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio and is released here with bonus tracks that were not part of the original release.
The sound is top notch and although the musicians don't come into the listening room, you are clearly in the recording studio in Chicago.
